The 2014 Gay Games have officially commenced in Cleveland, Ohio. The opening ceremony took place this past Saturday, August 9th at The Q, where thousands of amazing athletes from over 40 countries traveled to kickoff the Ninth Annual Gay Games. Visitors and residents alike have been questioning, what exactly are the Gay Games and what events take place during these games?
The exact definition, according to GG9.com:
The Gay Games are an international sporting and cultural event held every four years. Launched in 1982, the Games invite participation from all athletes—regardless of sexual orientation, race, gender identity, sex, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, political beliefs, athletic or artistic ability, age, physical challenge or health status. The Games offer a safe environment for LGBT competitors and are open to anyone 18 years or older. Typically, about 10% of participants are non-LGBT, often friends and family who participate to show their support.
So what sports will you see participants partake in at the 2014 Gay Games? A better question would be, what sports won’t you see at the Gay Games; Basketball, Bad-mitten, Darts, Sailing, Rowing, Swimming and Martial Arts are just a few of the many sporting events that will take place beginning now until August 16th. Along with the sporting events, spectators will have the pleasure of the attending all the entertainment that follows these incredible events. Live concerts, featuring artists such as The ChainSmokers, and themed parties will be taking place throughout the week at nearby Cleveland locations.
